Current Community Service Opportunities

We are looking to build the Laptop Upcycle project and expand our educational offerings. You can help us, build your school community service hours, and have fun at the same time. Here's what we currently have open.

PAINT  Laptop Upcycle has recently moved to a new, larger space in the basement of the United Way Building, 60 S. Fullerton Ave. During Spring Break, be a part of our painting team and help us brand and brighten our lab!

DISTRIBUTE FLYERS & POSTERS Laptop Upcycle needs community awareness. Can you visit local businesses and ask them if you can post a Laptop Upcycle flyer or poster? This is a great after school or weekend activity for small groups of students. Please let us know which businesses say Yes (or No). 

WEBSITE IMPROVEMENTS Our website always needs updates and new materials! Are you a great copy writer? Do you want to make a video or animation or slide show that will increase donations and open the door to more kids who need computers? Are you a social media maven? How can you help? We are open to your creative ideas!

WRITE Can you describe what Laptop Upcycle does in a 1-minute nutshell? Can you fill someone in on the history of the organization? Write up these simple “elevator” speeches, talk tracks and background information for other MHS students working to promote Laptop Upcycle.

START A GIVE/GET “DRIVE” @ MHS  Develop a plan to collect used, working laptops from MHS teachers and students. All donated laptops will go to Montclair students. 

CREATE MHS AWARENESS  MHS students in need may not know about Laptop Upcycle. Can you create an awareness program @ MHS through posters, speakers, emails, etc. to get the word out? You’ll be closing the achievement gap and technology gap!

CREATE COMMUNITY AWARENESS  Network with outside organizations to create interest and book presentations at local community organizations such as Rotary, Boy Scouts, elementary schools, etc.

START A LAPTOP UPCYCLE CLUB @ MHS  Be the central point of contact for all MHS-related Laptop Upcycle activities. You’ll work with an advisor for all Laptop Upcycle activities including collection, support materials development, and program awareness.

BE A TECHIE  Laptop Upcycle has Sunday lab hours (vary by date) for students who want to learn how to wipe data from hard drives, refurbish and test laptops, and then install the Linux OS on each donated computer. Students who become proficient can become trainers.

CAMPAIGN Businesses and computer companies have used laptops. What happens to these unneeded laptops?  Can you research, call and/or write to large and small companies asking for laptop donations.
