Laptop Upcycle is 100% volunteer run and managed. We love what we do and are always looking for others who share our passion. In addition to the in lab work described below, we need adult volunteers and board members to help us enhance our services and tell our story. Are you passionate about Computer Technology, Recycling and Reuse, Social Justice or Community Service?
We have have a spot for you. You don't need to have any experience; just a willingness to learn and participate earnestly to help us close the technology gap for kids in our schools. Our lab sessions are organized to teach volunteers to prepare and refurbish donated laptops to be given to kids who need them to do their homework. In these 2 hour sessions we:
- securely erase all data from the laptops using industry standard technology;
- test hardware and repair, upgrade or refurbish it as necessary;
- install safe, student-ready, school-ready, royalty-free open source software;
- clean and test laptops;
- harvest refurbishment parts from equipment not suitable for student use; and
- sell or responsibly recycle the remains.
- High School student volunteers earn community service hours by volunteering for Laptop Upcycle. We will complete any documentation they require. Volunteers should be responsible and willing to work independently. You will learn how
- Lab sessions are always run by adult volunteers.
- Parents are welcome to join us in the lab as volunteers or just to watch for your high school kid's first session.
- Volunteer Internships are available for College Students
- High School Seniors can apply for CIP(Career Internship Program) participation for their last 5 weeks of High School.
